Mare of Easttown Season 2 in ‘Early Discussions’ at HBO

Mare of Easttown may be getting her gun and badge back.

Three years after the Kate Winslet-led crime drama debuted, HBO is in “early discussions” about bringing it back for another season, our sister site Variety reports. While there’s “nothing in the works” currently, HBO head of drama Francesca Orsi stresses, “we are having early discussions about whether it might be time to start thinking of building something.”

A Season 2 could entail a significant time jump as well, Orsi adds: “We might be willing to figure out with Mare, years later, picking her up — not on the heels of where she ended, but there have been years for the character that have passed. Who is she now?”

Mare of Easttown starred Winslet as small-town detective Mare Sheehan, who investigated the murder of a local teen mom. The seven-episode series aired in 2021 and earned 16 Emmy nominations, with acting wins for Winslet and her co-stars Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters. But it was always billed as a limited series, competing as one at the Emmys.

Series creator Brad Ingelsby told TVLine in 2021 that he wasn’t sure what a Season 2 would look like: “If we can crack a story that is as great [as Season 1] and that would do justice to the characters and carry on the story in a way that was organic and yet surprising, I would love to do it. I just don’t know what the story is. That’s the issue right now.” (Ingelsby is next set to create a new limited series for HBO starring Mark Ruffalo.)

Winslet, meanwhile, told TVLine that she “would absolutely love to play Mare again,” adding, “I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role… There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her.”
