Sandra Oh says Awkwafina said "you can play whatever the f--- you want" when she expressed interest in costarring in 'Quiz Lady,' streaming on Hulu Nov. 3
In a new behind-the-scenes clip from 20th Century Studios' new comedy Quiz Lady, which stars Awkwafina, 35, and Oh, 52, the actors dish on what it was like to work together for the first time. In the new film, the pair play estranged sisters who reunite to attempt to eliminate their mother's gambling debt by winning a prize on a game show.
“I’m such a huge fan of Sandra, to actually play sisters — it was so cool," Awkwafina says of working with Oh.
Awkwafina plays Anne, a game-show obsessed woman, while Oh plays Jenny, her older sister whom an official synopsis for the film describes as a "train wreck."
“This is one of the best experiences of my career," Oh recalls of making Quiz Lady. "I remember talking to Awkwafina and saying, 'What do you think about me playing Jenny?’ And she said, ‘You can play whatever the f--- you want.' "
"When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide gameshow champion," the official synopsis reads.
Quiz Lady director Jessica Yu notes in the behind-the-scenes featurette that the Quiz Lady's two leads "know each other better than anyone."
"The way that they are attuned to each other is quite spectacular," she says.

"She took the improv a little far, I think," Awkwafina jokes of Oh's approach to the movie's comedy. "At one point, Sandra put her foot in my mouth.”
Quiz Lady was written by Jen D'Angelo, who wrote the screenplays for Hocus Pocus 2 and the new Kiernan Shipka Halloween-themed Totally Killer. D'Angelo has a television background, having produced and written episodes of Workaholics and Young Rock. She even appeared in a recent episode of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.
Oh and Awkwafina are joined by Will Ferrell, Jason Schwartzman, Holland Taylor and Tony Hale in the road trip comedy. Ferrell, 56, produced the movie alongside Awkwafina, Oh, Jessica Elbaum, Maggie Haskins, Itay Reiss, D’Angelo and executive producers Alex Brown and Erika Hampson.
“I hope that people get a sliver of how fun it was to shoot it," Oh says of the new movie.
Quiz Lady begins streaming on Hulu Nov. 3.
