Movistar Strikes Deals For Max & SkyShowtime In Spain

Movistar Plus+ has struck deals for the Max and SkyShowtime streamers in Spain.

On the former, Movistar and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) have extended their partnership to bring content from WBD’s portfolio of entertainment, sports, films and news to Movistar Plus+ customers, which includes combined streamer Max – launching in Spain in Spring 2024 along with 21 other European countries.

As part of the deal, Movistar+ Plus will remain home to WBD’s linear networks Warner TV, TCM, Discovery Channel, Eurosport, and CNN. From January 1, customers will also have access on select Movistar’s services.

“Spain represents one of the key territories for WBD and the partnership with an operator like Movistar is a crucial factor for the continued solid and steady growth of our streaming business internationally,” said Alessandro Araimo, Managing Director, WBD, Southern Europe.

The Nordics, the Netherlands, Iberia and CEE, which already have HBO Max, will gain access to the rebranded streamer in the spring. There will then be a “second wave” of launches later next year including in France and Belgium, which currently don’t have HBO Max, although WBD has an output deal with Amazon locally in France. The SVoD will launch later in the UK due to the pre-existing content deal between Sky and WBD.

SkyShowtime deal

Meanwhile, Movistar Plus+ has become the first Spanish operator to roll out Paramount/Comcast streamer SkyShowtime. The service launched in the nation earlier this year and the multi-year agreement will add another distribution spring to SkyShowtime’s bow by bringing it to Movistar-owned Telefónica’s TV offering.

The SVoD, which hosts a number of Spanish originals, is already available in numerous other European territories that don’t currently have access to Paramount+ or Comcast streamer Peacock.

“This is a momentous deal for both Movistar Plus+ and SkyShowtime and we are proud to be bringing our amazing entertainment to even more subscribers in Spain,” said SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan. “Our agreement demonstrates the importance and strength of partnerships and how we can work together to drive value for our respective businesses.”
