Mobile Dyke Bar: Can you find London's hottest new lesbian hangout?
All of the very best bars, restaurants and creative communities are crafted from two things: passion and necessity — and Lucy Nurnberg’s new Mobile Dyke Bar is no exception.
An artist and spatial designer, Nurnberg grew tired of the dwindling number of dedicated spaces available for “lesbian, trans and other marginalised queer people”, and decided to take matters into her own hands. Initially a project imagined for her interior design MA at the Royal College of Art, the now very real result is a travelling pop-up comprised of two vans joined together to form an “immersive, fantastical venue that will create a hub for queer connections”, says Nurnberg.
A bar and stage featuring “camp, butch-femme stylings like leopard print, leather and chains”, she hopes the space will ‘bring the dyke bar to the masses, making a fantasy futuristic utopia for dykes of all genders and their friends to let loose’.
The jazzily named “U-Haul Dyke Rescue Service Team” serves up an array of beers (including low- and no-alcohol versions) and plenty of what Nurnburg calls “classic dyke” hits by the likes of Peaches, Missy Elliott, Tracy Chapman and Joan Jett, all while hosting lively arm-wrestling tournaments.
After a stellar debut at Mighty Hoopla festival last weekend, which saw Real Housewives of New York icon, Luann de Lesseps, pop in, and DJ Kiki Snatch, as well as BB3’s I Kissed A Girl stars Meg Homer and Lailah Muscat take to the wrestling table, it’s safe to say the queer community is already hooked.
