KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — The homestay owner of a semi-detached house in Pendang, Kedah was baffled after discovering eggs left behind by guests had hatched.

Zakaria Nazir, a secondary school teacher, took to TikTok to share a clip which showed the carton of eggs, along with the hatchlings which turned out to be baby ducks.

The short clip has amassed over 800,000 views with over 50,000 likes since it was shared on November 6.

Talking to MStar, Zakaria, 29, said that a family from Kelantan had stayed there for a night last month. They left behind the carton of eggs, along with a fishing rod and a pillow.

According to Zakaria, the family was there for a fishing competition. Duck eggs are normally used as bait after being mixed with bran.

“When I called to inform them, they told me to hold on to their belongings as they would be returning for another fishing competition soon.

“I even asked them if I should store the eggs in the fridge. However, they told me to just leave them on the table,” Zakaria added.

Upon returning to the homestay on November 5, Zakaria found that there was a stench in the house. He was even more surprised to see a brood of ducklings on the egg carton, which used to contain 20 eggs.

“Nine ducklings had already hatched while the other four hatched the next day after I brought them home.

“However, the other seven had died and they were the reason for the bad smell. Altogether, 13 survived and I’m now a daddy to these ducklings.

“It’s funny because this is the first time it has happened to me. It's definitely a unique situation as normally guests would only leave behind clothes or towels,” he said.

Zakaria decided to take the ducklings under his wings, having reared chickens himself since he was a boy.

According to Zakaria, his parents in Jitra currently have 10 chickens and he plans to bring the ducklings there.

“But that depends on the real owner of the ducklings. If they want me to replace them with another carton of eggs, I’m more than willing to do so. It’s fun for me to take care of these ducklings,” Zakaria said.
