John Oliver Says It’s Not Trans Kids Who Are Plotting ‘Big, Deceitful’ School Cheating Schemes: ‘You’re Thinking of Lori Loughlin’ (Video)

John Oliver returned to a subject he’s talked about before on Sunday night’s episode of “Last Week Tonight”: trans rights. The late night host debunked “heartbreakingly stupid” theories being used to attack trans kids around the country, including the idea that they are identifying as trans simply as part of a massive cheating scandal.

In discussing the war on trans rights, Oliver specifically highlighted how many lawmakers are attempting to pass legislation to keep transgender kids out of school sports, claiming that trans women have a biologically unfair advantage over cisgender women. And while Oliver debunked that idea himself, he also used real life testimony from Hulu’s “Changing the Game” to back up his point.

In it, a high school female athlete who was defeated by a transgender man because said opponent was forced to compete with women, scoffed at the idea that trans athletes are attempting to cheat. “Do you really, honestly think someone would change their entire gender just so they would win state?” she marveled. “No! That’s not how it works.”

“Right! This obviously wasn’t an effort to cheat,” Oliver agreed. “Kids aren’t plotting big, deceitful school sports-related cheating schemes, just to get what they want. You’re thinking of Lori Loughlin. That’s who you’re thinking of here. You’re confused.”

Oliver was, of course, referring to the fact that the “Full House” actress, along with several other famous names, was caught and pleaded guilty to conspiracy after she and her husband were accused of paying $500,000 to get their two daughters into the University of Southern California as fake crew team recruits.

“So much of the conversation around anti-trans laws involves massively overheated rhetoric that does not match the reality of kids’ actual situations,” Oliver added.

The late night host then went on to debunk and mock the “heartbreakingly stupid” conspiracy theory that anti-trans activists are pushing, saying that kids in schools are identifying as cats and demanding litter boxes be installed for them to use.

“When you think about it for literally two seconds, the whole thing falls apart,” Oliver mocked. “For one, if kids were using litter boxes in class, a state representative from Minnesota would not be the one breaking that news to you. You would’ve f—ing heard about it! If a kid shat in a litter box in first period, it would be the only thing anyone in that state was talking about by lunch!”
