Sarawak disaster committee gets 436 applications to rebuild longhouses razed in fire

BINTANGOR, June 20 — The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has received a total of 436 applications since 2020 to help rebuild longhouses and individual homes destroyed in fire.

Its chairman Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said the applications worth RM131 million are for rebuilding a total of 2,041 housing units.

He said a total of 131 applications comprising 675 units and costing RM43.642 millions had been successfully implemented.

Uggah said this after visiting a 43-door longhouse of Rumah Labang anak Jawa in Sungai Tulai near here yesterday that was newly rebuilt after being razed in a fire in July, 2017 that is almost ready for occupation.

He said another 101 housing projects totalling 683 units and costing RM45.8 million are currently being built.

“Then we have another 204 new applications comprising 683 units and costing RM41.5 million,” he said, adding that for the Sarikei Division, seven projects for 40 units costing RM3 millions which are now completed.

He said these include Rumah Paun Balin, Rumah Labang Jawa and Rumah Jelum Mandaw longhouses and four individual homes.

He added another four projects for 43 units estimated to cost RM3 million are being implemented.

“These comprise the longhouses of Rumah Andrew Lawai, Rumah Sally Maling and Rumah Chat and an individual home,” he said.

Uggah said SDMC had also received four other applications for 42 units costing about RM2 million.

He said the state government would continue to look after the welfare of the people be they lived in urban or rural areas.

He said state Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg came up with the policy to assist fire victims after 2018 under the socio-economic and welfare programmes.
