KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 — Azril Kamarunzaman was today charged at the Sessions Court here with setting fire to 11 motorcycles and four electric scooters outside the Suria KLCC shopping centre last week.

The 34-year-old worked as a food delivery rider, Malay daily Berita Harian reported this afternoon.

He pled not guilty to burning the vehicles at the motorcycle parking lot in front of the Suria KLCC shopping centre on Jalan Ampang at 3.30pm on April 13.

The charge under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire is punishable with a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and a fine if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nurul Amalina Abu Hanifah wanted bail for the accused to be set at RM12,000.

But Azril’s lawyer Muhamad Ridzuan Umar sought a lower bail amount on account that his client had to support his wife and parents.

According to Berita Harian, Sessions Court judge Datuk Nu'aman Mahmud Zuhudi set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and scheduled May 22 for the accused to make his next court appearance.

The fire that broke outside the popular shopping mall was reported to have completely destroyed all four electric scooters and nine of the 11 motorcycles parked.

City police announced the arrest of a man just hours later on April 13.
