EMT Dies After Being Struck by Car While Helping Crash Victims on Her Way Home from Shift

Yanaisa Pulido worked as an EMT at Miami-Dade Ambulance and "wanted to help people however she could," according to loved ones

An EMT was hit and killed Sunday while helping victims at the scene of a crash.

The 23-year-old woman was driving southbound Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale when she stopped in a center lane to help two drivers involved in a crash, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, obtained by PEOPLE.

A short time later, two more cars crashed when one of the vehicles attempted to avoid the cars stopped in the roadway. One of the vehicles, a Cadillac ATS sedan, hit the Miami woman as it spun out of control.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, FHP said.

The victim was identified on GoFundMe as Yanaisa Pulido, who was “heading home with her partner after a shift” around 4 a.m. local time. Pulido’s partner was seriously injured in the crash as well, they added.

Dayami Apaulaza, who organized the online fundraiser, said Pulido had dreamed of becoming a first responder and “wanted to help people however she could.” She worked as an EMT at Miami-Dade Ambulance while attending school.

“All Yanaisa wanted to do was help people and save lives,” wrote Apaulaza in the description of the GoFundMe, which has garnered more than $32,000 as of midday Wednesday.

The City of Hialeah Fire Department, where Pulido once worked, also paid tribute to the late EMT. Pulido was a fire cadet from 2017 to 2020 and “continued to pursue her passion” by attending and graduating from the fire academy and EMT school.

“She was a kind-hearted person that was always willing to help others,” the fire department said in its statement. “She will always be remembered within our fire family.”

A viewing for Pulido will be held Wednesday evening at National Funeral Homes in Miami, according to the GoFundMe. Her funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at Memorial Plan Flagler Memorial Park.

At least three other people were injured in the crash, including the 41-year-old male driver of the Cadillac and his two passengers, a 34-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy, according to FHP.

The 41-year-old and 7-year-old sustained “incapacitating injuries,” the department said. The driver’s injuries were described as “critical.”
