A new scam is targeting people over email in Newfoundland and Labrador, and this time the perpetrator is impersonating the police.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador is warning the public that at least one person in the province has come forward, claiming they had been contacted over email to be issued a subpoena.

The email was from someone claiming to be a police officer and using an address that was similar to the RCMP's official email but came from an outlook.com account.

"The RCMP does not issue subpoenas via email. The RCMP also does not have an 'outlook.com' email address," wrote the RCMP in its statement.

"Scam emails may contain links that are troublesome to the user if activated. We advise users not to click on links in these types of scam emails."

The release added that anyone who receives such an email or any email they think could be a scam should not open the email, click on links or respond to the email.
