DC's Titans has cast its Batgirl ahead of season 3.

The show has enlisted Savannah Welch to bring Barbara Gordon to life – only this time, she won't be best known for beating up bad guys as the cowl-wearing vigilante, but rather hunting them down and locking 'em up as Gotham City's police commissioner.

According to Variety, the character's backstory takes inspiration from one of her most famous storylines in the comics, in which her days as The Dark Knight's crime-fighting sidekick are cut short when she's shot and paralysed by the Joker.

In the original source material, however, she most notably went on to adopt the moniker 'Oracle', and used her tech savvy to become an ally of the Birds of the Prey following the attack.

As the publication states, Titans' Barbara – who will use a wheelchair – is set to have a "combative relationship" with Bruce Wayne aka Batman, who is played by Game of Thrones' Iain Glen, and find her personal life grow all the more complicated when her ex-boyfriend Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) arrives in town again.

Aside from appearing in Richard Linklater's award-winning drama Boyhood, Welch has also featured in titles such as The Tree of Life opposite Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain, and History Channel military drama Six.

Titans airs on the DC Universe streaming service in the US, and on Netflix in the UK.
