More from Deadline

Set in the mid-90s, Steve is a reimagining of Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. The film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve (Murphy) and his students at a last-chance reform college amidst a world that has forsaken them. As Steve fights to protect the college’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy (Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.

Moloney and Murphy are producers. Director Mielants is a Peaky Blinders alum who also helmed Berlin Film Festival opener Small Things Like These. Porter wrote the screenplay. He and Murphy previously collaborated on the stage adaptation of the author’s Grief is the Thing with Feathers and also on the short film All of This Unreal Time.

Here’s a retro-style look at Murphy, Porter and Lycurgo on set:

Murphy has had a busy year, winning the Best Actor Oscar for Christopher Nolan’s Best Picture laureate Oppenheimer, among many other major accolades. He also starred in his feature producing debut, Small Things Like These, which was also directed by Mielants and opened the Berlin Film Festival in February. Next up he’s prepping for the Peaky Blinders movie which is set to begin production later this year for Netflix. Murphy is also signed on for Blood Runs Coal, based on Mark A Bradley’s book about the murder of union leader Joseph Yablonski, which Oppenheimer studio Universal pre-emptively acquired.

Murphy is repped by CAA, Lou Coulson Associates, David Weber and Main Stage PR. Lycurgo is with Insight Management & Production, Artists First and Public Eye Communications.
