KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — A character-based entertainment company known for its mystery blind boxes has continued its global expansion with the opening of its latest store in South-east Asia.

Pop Mart recently launched its first store in Malaysia, located on the fifth floor of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur shopping mall.

Malaysia is the latest market in the region that the brand is focusing on now that it has established itself in Singapore, with the Pop Mart store opening in the Lion City in 2021.

Pop Mart first made its foray into Malaysia in early 2021 through cross-border e-commerce. The past two years have seen the company cultivating the local market to build a good foundation for local offline stores.

“The opening of the Malaysian store means our business expansion in South-east Asia has entered a new era. Malaysia has huge potential as a major market for us after Singapore,” said Pop Mart global president, Justin Moon.

“Both countries have a similar social culture and offer a relatively large market of art toy collectors. We can leverage on what we have done in Singapore to build things up in Malaysia, with the possibility of future expansion into other neighbouring countries,” Moon added.

The 1,569 square feet store has been designed to appeal to young adults and millennials with colour-changing RGB lights on the doors and visually attractive colours and displays.

Pop Mart Malaysia’s range of merchandise includes limited edition items for local fans such as DIMOO Mango Jelly Plus, SKULLPANDA Dark Maid Limited Edition and Labubu Shepherd Limited Edition.

According to Moon, for many Chinese brands moving into overseas markets, South-east Asia is one of the most important markets for them.

"South-east Asian countries have rapid economic development, its consumers have strong purchasing power and the market space is large,” he added.

Pop Mart is located at 5.39, fifth floor of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and is open daily from 10am to 10pm.
