A new book about the Mueller investigation is set to publish this fall.

On July 11, Simon & Schuster announced the forthcoming publication of Interference: The Inside Story of Trump, Russia, and the Mueller Investigation. The book is a firsthand account of the investigation – led by Robert S. Mueller III, Aaron Zebley, James Quarles and Andrew Goldstein — of Russian interference in the 2016 election, as well as former President Donald Trump’s efforts to interfere with the special counsel’s investigation.

In 2017, Mueller, the former FBI Director, was asked to serve as special counsel by the Department of Justice. Mueller was tasked with investigating Russian interference with the 2016 election and any potential connections to the Trump campaign.

The investigation — which was the only federal crime investigation of Trump while he was in office — was also led by Zebley, Mueller’s deputy; Quarles, Mueller’s senior counselor and Goldstein, one of Mueller’s lead prosecutors. In 2019, a 448-page, redacted version of the team’s findings was published.

While the report stated that “the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities,” it also documented “numerous links between the Russian government and the Trump Campaign.” The account also explained Trump’s efforts to interfere with Mueller’s investigation.

Interference, described by the publisher as a “real-life thriller,” gives readers full access to the “consequential and difficult” decisions made by the special counsel, as well as the “pressures and dilemmas” they faced at that time.

Interference shows the importance of making principled decisions in unprincipled times,” Simon & Schuster said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “It is an urgent reminder of the challenges facing our country, both then and now.”

will be published on Sept. 24, 2024 and is now available for preorder, wherever books are sold.
