Biden speaks to Trump assassination attempt in Oval Office address saying ‘It’s time to lower the temperature’: Live

Joe Biden spoke to the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday evening, saying that no matter how strong our political convictions, we must never descend into violence, following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

“I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics. And remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies,” the president said, while seated behind the Resolute desk.

"We’re neighbors, friends, coworkers, citizens, and — most importantly — we’re fellow Americans.”

Meanwhile, Trump called on America to “stand united” after the shooting at his rally in Pennsylvania, shortly after 6pm on Saturday.

The former president, who was bundled off stage by Secret Service agents after a bullet hit his ear, thanked God for preventing the “unthinkable from happening”.

The suspected gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, opened fire from the rooftop of a building outside the security parameter.

One rallygoer was killed and two others were critically wounded before Crooks, a registered Republican, was shot dead by authorities.

The Secret Service faces questions over how the attack was allowed to unfold, with House Republicans demanding a hearing on the matter.

Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy. It’s part of human nature. But politics must never be a literal battlefield. God forbid a killing field. I believe politics ought to be an arena for peaceful debate.

We debate and disagree. We compare and contrast the character, the candidates, the records, the issues, the agenda, the vision for America. But in America, we resolve our differences at the ballot box.

I’ll continue to speak out strongly for our democracy, stand up for our Constitution, call for action at the ballot box. No violence on our streets. That’s how democracy should work. We debate and disagree.

Analysis: Donald Trump, a bullet and the fine red line that lies between democracy and violent chaos

Sunday 14 July 2024 16:05 , Oliver O'Connell

The Independent’s World Affairs Editor Kim Sengupta writes:

The blood on Donald Trump’s face was a shocking and vivid reminder of the fine red line that lies between democracy and violent chaos in even the world’s most powerful country.

The gunman’s bullet struck the former president’s right ear before Secret Service agents rushed to the stage and hauled him down.

And now, the image which emerged of him injured, fist raised in defiance, the Stars and Stripes flying above, may help propel him back into the White House.

With just an inch’s difference, the shot could have led to Trump’s death and sparked a very real chance of America – bitterly divided with a heavily armed population – sliding into widespread violence, insurrection, and possibly even a second civil war.
