2 Passenger Planes Collide on Airport Runway After Snowy Conditions Caused Skid
No injuries were reported in the incident, according to officials

Airplane collision in JapanTwo passenger planes collided on a runway in Japan on Tuesday.
Korean Air flight 766 “came into contact” with a Cathay Pacific aircraft stationed at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaidō, Japan, Korean Air said in a statement. No injuries were reported following the collision.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time ahead of the Korean Air plane’s scheduled flight to Seoul, South Korea, officials shared, per NHK. The jet was being moved by a taxi vehicle during pushback from the gate when it collided with a parked Cathay Pacific aircraft.

The Korean Air plane was carrying 276 passengers and 13 crew members at the time of the incident, reported ABC News. All of the passengers of the Cathay Pacific plane had exited before the collision.
“The airline is cooperating with all relevant authorities,” Korean Air shared on Instagram, adding that it “will do the best to serve passengers safely by quickly dispatching holdovers.”

According to NHK, snowy conditions on the tarmac caused the Korean Air plane to skid and collide with the second aircraft. Japan has experienced snow for a few days now as temperatures have reached freezing levels of 26 degrees, as shown in weather reports.
Footage obtained by the outlet reportedly showed the damage to both aircrafts after the collision. The left wing of the Korean Air plane appeared to be broken and there was a gap in the rear part of the Cathay Pacific aircraft.
No fire or fuel leak was reported on the planes at the time of the incident, according to airport officials, per NHK.
Flights have since been canceled at New Chitose Airport with more disruption expected, according to ABC News.

The incident comes two weeks after another plane collision in Japan that left five dead.
On Jan. 2, a Japan Airlines flight 516 collided with a Japan Coast Guard plane transporting Japan’s earthquake relief efforts, according to CNN and BBC. All 379 passengers and crew members onboard the jet were evacuated as it caught fire, reported multiple outlets.
Five out of six people who were on the Coast Guard plane died in the accident, according to NHK, per Reuters.
