Zoom and Instagram are among tech companies to have made it onto a list of the world’s top 100 most valuable brands for the first time.

The online giants made it into consultancy Interbrand’s 2020 Best Global Brands Report on Tuesday, in a reflection of how the Covid-19 pandemic has boosted the sector.

Instagram was named the 19th most valuable global business with an estimated value of around $26.1 billion (£20 billion), while Zoom just made it onto the list in 100th place and with a brand valuation of $4.5bn (£3.5 billion).

Zoom's videoconferencing technology has been a hit since the pandemic struck earlier this year, with users around the globe using the software for both work and social reasons.

The company's shares hit a record high last month after the company revealed a surge in earnings.

Other new entrants to the list, which has been produced for 21 years, also included YouTube, which came in 30th.

Apple retained its place as the valuable brand in the world, with Amazon coming in second with an estimated value of nearly $201 billion (£155 billion).

People around the world have flocked to Amazon as they avoided high streets over the past six months, and the report found the ecommerce giant’s value soared by 60% as a result of its pandemic gains.

Microsoft overtook Google, pushing it out of the top three places for the first time since 2012.

Interbrand cited the “Covid effect” and rising “relevance” for the new tech company entrants to its fold.

Interbrand's global chief executive, Charles Trevail, said: “Leadership, engagement and relevance are three consistent themes we are seeing as brands try to navigate the rapidly changing business landscape.

“They are the keys to unlock results in the current crisis, building customer confidence and business resilience. By setting out powerful ambitions and pursuing them with courage and conscience, brands can help us lift our heads, make sense of chaos, and see beyond it, championing a new decade of possibility.”
