Zombie worm survives 24,000 years in deep freeze

It’s a zombie worm!

Location: Moscow, Russia

This microscopic worm came back to life

after 24,000 years in frozen water

and reproduced on its own

The ancient animal is called the bdelloid rotifer

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MEMBER OF RESEARCH TEAM, STANISLAV MALYAVIN, SAYING:

“It's clear that rotifers and creatures like them survive thousands of years not because they are apt for this on purpose. It's not needed and pointless from a biological point of view. They just do it every year, sometimes several times a year when their environment is freezing in winter.”

Rotifers were believed to live up to

10 years in freezing temperatures

This case sets the new record by far
