New Zealand plans to price sheep and cow burps

STORY: New Zealand plans to put a price on sheep and cow burps

to tackle one of the country's biggest sources of greenhouse gases

New Zealand is home to:

5 million people

10 million cattle

26 million sheep

Under the draft plan, farmers would pay for emissions from livestock from 2025

Short and long-lived farm gas will be priced separately

but a single measure to calculate their volume will be used

Revenue from the scheme will be invested in research

development and advisory services for farmers

A final decision on the scheme is expected in December 2022
