You'll Never Buy a Cheap Drugstore Razor Again Once You Try This One
There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.
On Trial: Flamingo razor and foaming shave gel

The Brief: Flamingo was a line I saw displayed at Target and in social media ads. I needed a new razor and put it to the ultimate test: Would it prompt me to shave my legs more frequently in the winter? First of all, I’ll say that you hardly even need shaving cream to go with it because it glides so smoothly. But it's also no laughing matter when it comes to sharpness either.
One major positive about this brand is razor equality (can I get an amen, ladies). Flamingo is a sister company to Harry’s, and these non-flimsy razors are made very similarly to men’s razors. The Flamingo razor has five blades that get right up close to your skin, and an ergonomic handle that won’t slide out of your hand just when you’re getting to that main strip on your calf. The main differences from the men’s razor — since Flamingo is not made for your face — are that it has an aloe vera strip for extra hydration, and a flexible hinge and rounded edges to more skillfully contour to those tricky spots.

The foaming shave gel just takes things to the next level. Some shaving creams feel weird and overly foamy on your skin, but this almost has the feeling of whipped cream on your leg. It has an especially soft texture. That is thanks to the aloe vera in the formula — it’s meant to actually condition your skin while you’re shaving, so that you don’t get out of the shower having stripped your skin of all its moisture.
When you first order anything from Flamingo, you have so many options: You can purchase just the razor, just the blades, just the shave gel, or you can get the whole kit and caboodle. The shave set includes a razor, extra blade, the shave gel, and a moisturizing white willowbark-based lotion, along with a shower hanger that suctions to the shower wall and keeps your razor in place.
The part that’s actually more convenient for some people is that is that Flamingo is not a subscription service and won't lock you into any plan, price-wise. You can buy the razor blades, shave gel, or lotion you need when you need them, and can either order online or pick them up at your local Target store. I like to have options, personally.

Another plus is that on a whole, this razor is a budget-friendly and more eco-friendly option, because you’re never disposing of the razor itself like you would with a cheap drugstore razor — you’re just replacing the blades (which you don’t actually have to do very often). The can of gel lasts quite a while, too.
The only possible downside is that when the blade starts to get dull, the smooth outer edge almost gets “stuck” in your armpit instead of swiping across smoothly. The solution to that is just keeping the blade cartridges on hand to easily replace. Luckily, you’ll never have to buy a full-on razor again — and you’d never want to go back to another brand — once you have Flamingo.
Closing Argument: The Flamingo razor and shave gel equals a smoother shave in general. You won’t have to go back over “missed spots,” and you’ll have more time between shave sessions, so it's worth it. And any shower time I have left for singing is a definite positive in my book.
