In what officials call a key step to combat climate change, the Environmental Protection Agency is sharply limiting domestic production and use of hydrofluorocarbons, highly potent greenhouse gases commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioners. The new rule, which follows through on a law Congress passed last year, is intended to decrease U.S. production and use of HFCs by 85% over the next 15 years, part of a global phaseout designed to slow global warming. HFCs are greenhouse gases that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
Germany's Solarwatt opened a new production line for photovoltaic modules on Thursday as part of a 100 million euro ($117 million) investment, as it promotes the convergence of the renewable power, smart home, heating and e-mobility. The line will produce one million modules per year, enough to allow 80,000 households to meet their power needs with renewable electricity, it said in a statement to coincide with an inauguration event. Police in San Diego are seeking help identifying a suspect who was seen on camera setting a fire at the front doors of a college building in the city last August.The fire, on August 6 at the Southwestern College Higher Education Center, caused around $5,000 worth of damage, police said.
