New Yorkers Take to the Streets in Protest of Supreme Court Abortion Draft
Protesters gathered in New York to demonstrate for abortion rights on May 3, after the leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion indicating a majority of the court is prepared to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade decision.
The draft opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito in February, was obtained by Politico. According to the document, the court had voted to strike down the decision, which guaranteed federal abortion protections since 1973, and would bring an end to the “guarantee of federal constitutional protection of abortion rights and allow each state to decide whether to restrict or ban abortion,” Politico said.
Politico reported the obtained draft majority opinion from Justice Samuel Alito on May 2, which sparked a snap protest outside the Supreme Court at the time.
Protests were held in other major cities on May 3, including outside the Supreme Court in Washington.
