Yoink! Brazen Baboons Steal Food From Hippo Family in South Africa

A crafty troop of baboons successfully stole provisions from a family of hippos as they took a dip in South Africa.

Footage by Gosia Zdziechowska, shared to her Polish Dr Dolittle YouTube channel, shows the sneaky primates pilfering food while the hippos splashed in the water near Hoedspruit in the Limpopo region of South Africa.

They soon ditch all attempts of being discreet, and resort to taking the food from right under the hippos’ noses.

Zdziechowska told Storyful that the mother and father of the hippo family were rescued as babies, and grew up at the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre. They were released back into the wild as adults.

“When there is not enough food, the workers and volunteers bring extra food to this family,” Zdziechowska explained.

“One day when we brought them food, there was a baboon troop and they rushed to get as much food as they could before the hippos got out of the water,” she said. Credit: Polish Dr Dolittle via Storyful
