Yes, you can bet on that: The U.S. women's water polo team are big favorites for gold

You’re not going to get a big return if you bet the United States to win gold in women’s water polo.

The U.S. is -500 at BetMGM to win the tournament after easily winning its first two preliminary round games of the 2020 Olympics. The U.S. started the tournament with a 25-4 win over hosts Japan and then beat China 12-7 on Monday to move to 2-0.

There are two more preliminary games to go for the U.S. before the knockout rounds begin. The women play Hungary on Wednesday and the Russian athletes on Friday. The Hungarians may be the biggest test for the U.S. before the semifinals. Hungary is tied with Australia and Spain at +900 for second favorite behind the U.S. The Russian athletes are at +1600 behind the Netherlands at +1000.

The women’s final is set for 2:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Men’s field is super competitive

While the U.S. has a clear advantage in the women’s competition, there’s no obvious favorite in the men’s tournament. In fact, five teams have odds at +500 or better to win the tournament.

The U.S. is not one of them. The United States beat Japan 15-13 on Sunday to win their first game of the tournament. But the U.S. is at +10000 to win and is No. 7 on the board. The U.S. plays South Africa on Tuesday and then Italy on Thursday before concluding group play against Hungary on Saturday.

Hungary is tied with Serbia at +250 as the favorites in the competition. Italy isn’t too far behind at +400. If the U.S. can sneak out a win in either of its final two group stage games, their odds to win the tournament suddenly become a lot more tantalizing. But Hungary and Italy will both be solid favorites and should take care of business.

Croatia, meanwhile, is tied with Italy at +400 to win at Spain is at +500 to win gold. The men's final is on Sunday, Aug. 8.
