Xana Antunes, Former NY Post Top Editor, Dies at 55

Xana Antunes, the former editor-in-chief of the New York Post and executive editor of Quartz, died Monday at the age of 55, according to multiple publications where she held high-ranking editorial positions. Her cause of death was pancreatic cancer.

Antunes was born in Scotland and moved from London to New York in 1993. She joined the NY Post in 1995 as deputy business editor, and was promoted to editor-in-chief of the paper in 1999, a role she would hold until 2001.

She also worked at Crain’s New York Business, CNBC Digital, the New York Post, Fortune, CNN Money and most recently, Quartz.

Quartz’s managing editor, Kira Bindrim, wrote an obituary for the site’s leader Tuesday, saying, “To understand Xana Antunes, you have to understand what she’d say in this moment. Confronted with reverent recitations of her professional accomplishments; with quotes and anecdotes from the people whose lives she touched; with overwrought musings on mortality; Xana, reading a draft of her own remembrance, would peer at me over her the top of her glasses, raising both eyebrows as she pushed down her laptop screen. ‘Well it’s all just a bit morbid, isn’t it?’ she’d say. ‘Honestly, you don’t even need the first half.'”

Antunes was celebrated in other publications where she held high-ranking editorial roles.

The Post’s Keith Kelly wrote, “Full disclosure: Antunes was instrumental in convincing this reporter to jump from the Daily News to The Post in 1998, shortly before her promotion to top editor.”

“The first in a long list of ways I will miss her: that she isn’t here to edit this,” wrote Bindrim.
