Wyoming football signee shot and killed in Dallas hotel

A University of Wyoming football signee was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning in Dallas, Texas.

The Dallas Police Department said in a statement Sunday that 17-year-old Tony Evans Jr. was shot at a hotel in Dallas early Sunday morning. Police were called around 1:35 a.m. Evans was brought to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Dallas Morning News, another person was also shot in the incident. The other victim was hospitalized and is in stable condition.

Police have not released details about the incident and said both the suspect and motive are “unknown” at this time.

Evans, a wide receiver out of Lancaster (Texas) High School, signed with Wyoming in February as part of its 2021 recruiting class.

“Our hearts are with the Evans family as they go through this incredibly difficult time,” Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said. “We are so sad to hear of Tony’s passing. We have been in contact with Tony’s family and are here to support them in any way we can.”

When Evans signed with Wyoming, Bohl noted his big play ability and that he coached his father at the University of Tulsa.

"It's a small world. The name Tony Evans struck me when I saw it. When we started recruiting Tony, I realized I was on the coaching staff at Tulsa when Tony Jr.'s dad played there," Bohl said in February. "It is great to have Tony Jr. join our program. He possesses great receiving skills. He is a tall receiver, who can stretch the field, and he comes from an excellent high school program."
