Following the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in the custody of Iran’s morality police, women have taken to social media to post footage of themselves cutting their hair in protest.

The woman that died, Mahsa Amini, was detained on September 13 over how she wore her hijab as well as the dress she was wearing, Iranian media reported. Amini died three days later on September 16 after falling into a coma, the BBC and other outlets reported.

Amini’s death sparked demonstrations across Iran, with some women seen burning headscarves.

In a statement, the UN Human Rights Office called for an independent probe into Amini’s death.

“There are reports Amini was beaten on the head with a baton, and her head was banged against the vehicle by the so-called morality police,” the office said. “Authorities have stated she died of natural causes.”

Acting UN Human Rights chief Nada Al-Nashif said Amini’s "tragic death and allegations of torture and ill-treatment must be promptly, impartially and effectively investigated by an independent competent authority, that ensures, in particular, that her family has access to justice and truth.”

In a press briefing on Monday, Greater Tehran Police Commander Hossein Rahimi gave his condolences to Amini’s family and said the “incident was unfortunate”, according to Fars. He added that the nation’s morality police was “doing positive work”. Credit: @somtow1987 via Storyful
