SINGAPORE — A woman accused of mixing her urine and menstrual blood into food meant for the consumption of others in a flat denied the offence on Wednesday (2 December), with the court hearing that no testing was done on the soiled food items as they were completely consumed.

Filipina Rowena Ola Canares, 43, faces one charge of committing mischief by mixing some of her urine and menstrual blood into the food which was meant for occupants in a Compassvale flat in December 2018, diminishing the utility of the food and and knowing that she would cause wrongful loss to the occupants.

During what was meant to be Canares’ plead guilty hearing, her lawyer Kalaithasan Karuppaya told the court that his client claimed she never committed the offence.

This led District Judge Marvin Bay to ask if any DNA testing was done in this case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Keith Jieren Thirumaran then replied that no DNA evidence could be produced.

“Briefly, the evidence is that the accused had admitted in several statements that she had done so and there’s also several communications between the accused and the accused’s boyfriend at the time when she said she did so,” the prosecutor told the court.

DJ Bay then asked if the food was eaten and the DPP said yes.

“Therefore there’s no residue for testing? Are there any leftovers?” DJ Bay asked.

In response, the prosecution said that nothing was available for testing. Some time had lapsed by the time the offence was discovered, the DPP added.

As Canares intends to challenge the charge, her case was sent back for a pre trial conference on 25 January.

If convicted on committing mischief, she could be jailed up to a year, or fined, or both.
