The death of a 21-year-old woman found on a New York expressway earlier this month is believed to be accidental, according to police.

The Cheektowaga Police Department said in an initial release on Facebook that authorities received calls on Feb. 8 just before 6:30 p.m. for an ejection from a motor vehicle on the Westbound Kensington Expressway between Cayuga and Union Road.

The 21-year-old woman, who has not been identified at this time, was found on the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police now say evidence shows she climbed out of the rear window as her Uber was moving and that her upper torso was outside the vehicle when she fell, NBC affiliate WGRZ, CBS affiliate WIVB and ABC affiliate WKBW reported Thursday.

The victim was then struck by another car as it traveled down the expressway, per the reports. The driver and the 21-year-old were the only passengers inside the car at the time of the incident, according to WKBW and WIVB.

Still, Cheektowaga Police Capt. Jeffrey Schmidt told WIVB that the "hardest and most frustrating part" is that investigators may never truly know what caused her to fall.

"We just can’t really imagine what this must be like for the family," he added. "It’s a devastating loss for them and just a tragic thing that’s occurred here."
