Two brothers died after a tragic accident on a Wisconsin pond.

The boys, ages 6 and 8, both fell through the ice of a retention pond in Sun Prairie, Wis. on Saturday, Sun Prairie Police Department Assistant Chief Shunta Boston confirmed to PEOPLE.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“This is a tragedy that is one of those things that's very important that we do report out to our public to keep them informed,” Boston said.

"We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends significantly impacted by this loss," the Sun Prairie Police Department said in a press release.

The Sun Prairie Police Department received a 911 call on Friday, and authorities arrived at the scene at approximately 3:20 p.m. The Sun Prairie Fire Department then arrived at the scene and the two boys were removed from the pond and taken to a hospital.

Both boys arrived at the hospital in critical condition. The older boy died on Saturday and the younger died on Monday, Boston said.

On Monday, SPPD announced in a press release that over the weekend they were made aware of the “tragic passing of one of the boys." The updated statement continued, “The medical examiner’s office confirmed that the second child had also passed."

The boys' baseball league, BMC Youth Baseball, shared the news of the older brother's death on Facebook and identified them as Antwon, 6, and Legend, 8.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a bright young soul who was taken from us too soon,” read the statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of these precious boys during this unimaginably difficult time.”

“May his memory be a source of comfort and strength, and may our community come together to support this family and one another through this heartbreaking loss,” continued the Sunday statement.

On Monday, the baseball team announced Antwon had died and paid tribute to him.

“Words cannot express the depth of sorrow and pain this family is going through. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support received from the community and communities beyond,” read the Monday statement. “Your prayers, kind words, and acts of kindness have meant so much to this family during this difficult time.”

Their mother, Kiana Sims, created a GoFundMe page to raise money for a memorial and funeral “to honor the precious lives of these two beautiful souls.”

“Their bright smiles, infectious laughter, and boundless energy touched the lives of all who knew them. They were beloved sons, brothers, friends, and classmates,” read the GoFundMe description. “Their absence has left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we are committed to ensuring that they are remembered with the love and dignity they deserve.”

Representatives for Sun Prairie Fire Department and Dane County Medical Examiner's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for additional information on Tuesday.
