Winter Conditions Create Crystalized Scene at Illinois Lakefront

Trees along the lakefront in Highland Park, Illinois, were coated with icicles on Monday, January 4, after snow, fog, and freezing drizzle set the scene for a crystalized landscape, according to the National Weather Service.

Footage shared by Michael Heimlich shows frozen water suspended from tree branches by Lake Michigan as icy waters crashed onto the shore.

Several factors including low clouds, fog, freezing temperatures, and light winds beginning on Sunday created a coating of rime ice on surfaces, as the same conditions were expected to continue into Tuesday, the NWS said. Credit: Michael Heimlich via Storyful
