Windows Smashed, Buildings Damaged During Brasilia Riots Condemned by Lula

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro clashed with police, smashed windows, and caused damage inside the Supreme Court in Brasilia on Sunday, January 8, footage from the storming of the building shows.

George Marques recorded this video of groups of protesters in front of the Congress and Supreme Court buildings in Brasilia.

His footage shows people smashing windows at the Supreme Court, confrontations with officers near destroyed police vehicles, and protesters causing damage to the interior of the building.

At least 300 people had been arrested in connection with the storming of the Brazilian Supreme Court and Congress by Sunday night, local media reported.

In an address on Sunday, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the protesters and signed a decree declaring federal intervention in Brasilia.

Bolsonaro also addressed the incidents, tweeting, according to machine translation, that peaceful demonstrations were “part of democracy”, but that “depredations and invasions of public buildings such as occurred today, as well as those practiced by the left in 2013 and 2017, escape the rule.” Credit: George Marques via Storyful
