Wind Whips Through Cancun as Hurricane Grace Bears Down

Hurricane Grace made landfall as a Category 1 storm just south of Tulum, Mexico, at around 4.45 am CDT on Thursday, August 19, carrying maximum sustained winds of 80 mph.

Footage from Ricardo Vicencio shows wind and rain lashing a beachfront hotel in Cancun on Thursday morning. Vicencio said he shot the video a few minutes before 3 am.

The United States’ National Hurricane Center warned that hurricane conditions and a dangerous storm surge were expected along the eastern Yucatan Peninsula, and heavy rainfall over northern Yucatan and Veracruz state would likely produce flash and urban flooding as Grace moved westward.
