Wind and Rain Lash Kolkata as Cyclone Amphan Bears Down

Winds and rain battered the Kolkata area on May 20 as Cyclone Amphan approached, having made landfall over the afternoon as an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” over the northwest Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The IMD said that over the following hours Amphan brought wind speeds of 155-165 km/h (96-103 mph), with wind gusts of up to 185 km/h (114 mph), as it moved over the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast.

This footage shows the conditions in Thakurpukur, a suburb on the southeastern outskirts of Kolkata.

India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said it had dispatched 37 teams to the states of Odisha, where NDRF workers were clearing downed trees from roadways on Wednesday evening, and West Bengal. Credit: @chiragbatra via Storyful
