Wildfires swallow homes in northern Athens suburbs

STORY: High winds whipped up the flames in the region, some 27 kilometres from downtown Athens, with Greece's fire service saying the gusts reached 80 kilometres an hour and continuously changed direction.

Evacuations of several suburbs and at least one hospital continued throughout the night as more than 480 firefighters and volunteers, including a team from Romania, took part in the operation and emergency services were put on standby.

Three firefighting planes and four helicopters were taking part by dawn, the fire service said.

The fire was still active in at least four suburbs in the region, the fire service said, and had damaged houses, without providing further details.
