When one innocent Instagram user commented on a makeup-free picture of Jameela Jamil saying she had perfect skin, we highly doubt she had any idea the Twitter firestorm it would create.

However, it wasn't this compliment alone that caused it, but rather Jameela's reply to it, as in response to the comment on her skin she said:

"My skin is currently clear because:

"A) Privileged people have more access to good quality nutrition and also our lives are significantly less stressful than the lives of those with less privilege. I also get to sleep more because of this. All of these things keep my hormones in balance and I'm able to address food tolerances easily.

"B) I believe that trans rights are human rights.

"C) I exfoliate twice a week."

That response immediately divided the Internet and the topic began trending on Twitter, with some praising her for being "honest about her privilege" and others calling her our for "performative activism".

"There's a fine line between acknowledging your privilege and talking about it 24/7 in some weird humblebrag like Jameela Jamil lol," wrote one user.

"Jameela Jamil truly has the biggest saviour complex i’ve ever seen in my life like she really views herself like Mother Teresa rescuing the poor people and it shows," added another.

One user pointed out how equating clear skin to being a good person is also damaging, "I know that dunking on Jameela Jamil is tiresome and repetitive but I really wish we could all retire the constant equating of beauty & goodness. This ugly acne-prone scale-face would rather we stop the moral grandstanding of claiming good looks are connected to your beliefs."

While another called her out for bringing trans lives into it, "dear Jameela Jamil, quit using trans lives as a catchphrase at the end of any irrelevant comment and ruining the value of the movement."

However others praised her for how she uses her platform.

"I just think the way people bash Jameela Jamil or call her annoying for being consistently political is very indicative of the way we’ve been taught to see women in media"

"You all cry about celebs being fake/lying about work they’ve had done or treatments they get regularly and then Jameela Jamil is honest about her privilege and you’re all like 'someone can’t even say hello to her without getting a paragraph'," one user wrote.

"Jameela Jamil can’t breathe without people saying something about her. She actively tries to better herself and speaks out on several issues but that’s not enough for you people. Save the energy for your faves who are shit people xoxo"

Jameela has addressed the controversy herself in an Instagram comment saying the negative response is a sign of "intense misogyny".
