After an Oklahoma father killed his wife and three of their four sons in their home this week, their family is struggling to understand why the tragedy occurred.

Lindsay Candy, 39, and her sons, Dylan Candy, 18, Ethan Candy, 14, and Lucas Candy, 12, were found by police after they were shot to death by Jonathon Candy, 42. The Oklahoma City Police Department stated that Jonathon gunned down his family and was also found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police later revealed that the couple’s 10-year-old son was unharmed and was the person who called 911 that morning after waking up to find his family dead, PEOPLE previously reported. He’s currently staying with a relative, according to police.

In a statement credited to the Candy family and shared with local station KFOR on April 23, the family expressed shock and described Jonathon as “goofy.”

“Our entire family has been left shattered and confused with so many questions we won’t ever have answers to,” the statement reads, according to the outlet. “Jonathon was the one whose jokes and goofy attitude kept everyone smiling. Aside from these events, his children and wife were his entire life.”

The statement continues, “I simply can’t fathom what went on but please, hug your family tight. It’s going to be a very long healing process for everyone affected.”
