Whoopi Goldberg is urging comedian Nikki Glaser to stay far, far away from Instagram, TikTok, and just about any other social media platform after she hosts the Golden Globes next month.

The EGOT winner, who has hosted the Oscars four times and the Grammys once, took a moment during Wednesday’s episode of The View to give Glaser a few tips and tricks to help her better handle the awards ceremony before she hosts it on Jan. 5.

“You’re the guide, and you’re gonna take all the hits. And it doesn’t matter what you do, there’s gonna be a whole contingent who are going to be [complaining],” Goldberg told Glaser. “Don’t look at any social media. Don’t look at anything. Go do your thing and kick everybody’s ass.”

Goldberg’s cohosts agreed with her advice, telling Glaser that she should turn off any Google Alerts involving her name so that she isn’t notified about any reviews or reactions related to the evening afterward. “Thank you,” a touched Glaser replied, leaning back in her seat and putting a hand to her heart.

“You’re getting tips from the best,” Sunny Hostin added, pointing at Goldberg. Glaser responded, “I know, this is amazing.”

Earlier in their discussion, Glaser revealed that she was surprised to discover that some celebrities choose to turn down hosting award shows like the Globes.

“A lot of people do because it’s scary,” Goldberg explained. “You have to be able to know that here’s your time for your jokes, for your monologues and stuff. You have to know when stuff is happening so you can get on top of it. You see it, but nobody else sees it, and so when you come back out you’re talking about it. You’re the thing that keeps everybody moving forward.”

She then shut down Hostin’s suggestion that it was the host’s performance that kept attendees in their seats during the show, jokingly adding, “What keeps them in their seat is, ‘Did I win?’”

Goldberg is the perfect person to give Glaser advice ahead of the ceremony, given her experience helming the Grammys in 1992 and being one of the few celebrities to have hosted the Oscars four times alongside Jimmy Kimmel and Jack Lemmon.

Glaser, meanwhile, is set to make history by becoming the first woman to ever host the Golden Globes on her own next month, following a breakout 2024 that saw her make headlines for her powerful punchlines in Netflix's roast of Tom Brady. Women have previously been partnered up to host the Globes, with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey serving as the first female duo to serve as the ceremony’s emcees in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2021.

The comedian teased a bit of how she plans to win over viewers during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I have to say who I am first. I have to be a little softer and more self-deprecating,” she said. “Because I’m not as well-known, I can’t just come out swinging. They’ll be like, ‘Who is this lady and why does she think she has a right to talk to us this way?’ I can’t come in with the same annihilating venom as I did at the Tom Brady roast. With status comes the ability to punch harder.”

The Golden Globes airs on Jan. 5, 2025 on CBS. The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
