Whale made of recycled plastic swims over Kyiv
Placed on six metal pillars, the artwork aims to draw people's attention to the importance of environmental protection and recycling, its creator Valeriy Korshunov said on Wednesday (September 15).
It is the country's biggest plastic sculpture weighing approximately 750 kilograms (1,653 lb), according to Korshunov.
Some 2,000 people, including students from dozens of Kyiv schools, collected plastic waste from the city parks and rivers. The plastic was recycled and turned into the parts of the whale's body attached to a metal frame.
Korshunov said it was important for him to get children involved in the project to help them develop green habits and learn more about sorting waste, as he said Ukraine had a particular problem with waste dumping.
The artist plans to install more sculptures in other Ukrainian cities, but did not reveal his plans for how they would look.
Korshunov is well known for his art projects in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, including a giant mural on the Chernobyl power plant.
