West Ham United have reportedly made Lille manager Paulo Fonseca their primary target to replace David Moyes, who is also on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar.

The 50-year-old has enjoyed spells at Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk in the past, where his attacking style has been characterised by a focus on dominating possession.

West Ham could certainly do with some new ideas after enduring a difficult season. With that in mind, appointing Fonseca would be a real statement of intent.

Now, according to reports coming out of France, the Hammers have made Fonseca their ‘priority’ as they consider bringing in a replacement for Moyes.

The Scotsman is still battling to keep West Ham in the Premier League, with the London club currently four points above the drop zone.

Indeed, this is in stark contrast to their previous two seasons, when Moyes helped them secure sixth and seventh-place finishes.

Now, various reports suggest pressure is mounting on the West Ham boss, as the club consider whether to move in another direction.

It could be a summer of change for the Hammers, with club captain Declan Rice expected to leave the club. They are expected to receive between £70m and £100m for his services, so they will need a manager who can put those funds to good use.

Fonseca ‘keeping an eye’ on West Ham

According to another report from the Sun, Fonseca is ‘keeping an eye’ on West Ham’s situation. They also add that the manager is ‘open’ to leaving Lille this summer, if he isn’t given adequate funds for the transfer window.

Fonseca came close to joining West Ham in 2018. Indeed, at the end of Moyes’ first spell, he allegedly met with David Sullivan, before Manuel Pellgrini took the helm for a brief stint.

As mentioned, he has since managed Roma and then Lille, taking the latter from 10th to fifth this season – yet they are still 10 points off a Champions League spot with five games remaining.

The Portuguese coach also came close to taking charge at Tottenham in 2021, only for negotiations to break down at the last minute.

Fonseca is once again thought to be on Daniel Levy’s radar as he looks for a new manager ahead of next season. Although, Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann still seem to be leading the pack.

This would make West Ham the firm favourites to bring him in, if they made an official approach now. However, the official message from inside the club is that Moyes will be staying for another season.

Nevertheless, the former Everton manager’s future will most likely rely upon the Hammers’ results in their last four games. And, of course, whether or not they avoid relegation.
