West Ham make sensational return for Man Utd man as Moyes hatches plan to beat obstacle
West Ham have reportedly reopened talks with Manchester United for Harry Maguire, and are planning on helping with his contract pay-off, an issue that arose previously.
The early part of the transfer window was a frustrating one for the Hammers. They tried and failed to sign a number of players, such as United man Scott McTominay, with internal issues contributing to the lack of signings.
They have now signed three players: Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos, but they fell short of signing their main target, Maguire.
It was reported after they had agreed a £30million deal with United that they had ‘grown frustrated’ on waiting for the Red Devils to agree a contract pay-off with the defender, in light of him still having two years left on his deal.
As such, things fizzled out, but reports now suggest they’re returning with a plan to beat that obstacle. Indeed, The Sun reports the Hammers have ‘reopened talks’ with United.
What’s more, it’s said they are ‘trying to find a way to pay a little more to help United to pay off’ Maguire.
While the report states West Ham are currently ‘well short’ of getting the deal over the line, it states United ‘want a sale to finance other signings’.
With that being said, they’d surely welcome attempts from the Hammers to ensure the sale goes through for as high a price as they can pay.
However, the sticking point in the deal may be Maguire himself. It was reported when the deal fell through after the agreement that he “never had an agreement” with West Ham, but them paying more money could see that change.
Another reason that was cited was that Maguire “believes he will get plenty of opportunities to play this season” for United.
It certainly sounds as if he is clinging on to being a United player for as long as he possibly can – despite starting just eight league games last season – which surely makes things tricky for the Hammers.
However, in United’s three games so far this season, Maguire hasn’t played a single minute. If there is a favourable contract on the table at West Ham, the lack of game time at Old Trafford might mean he decides to leave.
