West Ham are reportedly ‘one step away’ from signing Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca, with ‘negotiations at an advanced stage’.

Arsenal were linked with Scamacca both in January, having missed out on Dusan Vlahovic, and again this summer before they landed Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

Scamacca’s ‘future will almost certainly be in the Premier League’, according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, but with West Ham rather than Arsenal.

Pedulla claims the Hammers are ‘one step away’ from landing the 23-year-old this summer, with ‘only a few details missing’.

‘Negotiations are at an advanced stage’ over a deal that would see David Moyes’ side pay €40m up front, with a further €7m due in bonus payments.

Sassuolo are said to have accepted the bid with the one step left to negotiate presumably personal terms with the player.

Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on adding the striker to their ranks but talks with Sassuolo stalled after the French giants informed them they were not prepared to pay more than €30-35m.

Scamacca, who has seven caps for Italy and scored 16 Serie A goals for Sassuolo last term, would be West Ham’s fourth signing of the summer following the additions of Nayef Aguerd (£31.5m), Alphonse Areola (£8.3m) and Flynn Downes (£9.5m).

Former England Under-20 international Downes has already made almost 150 career appearances but could not hide his delight at joining his boyhood club from Swansea.

“It’s a surreal feeling to have joined my boyhood club, I feel like I’m dreaming,” he said.

“The manager’s track record of bringing players through was a big motivation in me joining the club.

“I want to be the best I can be and this feels like the perfect opportunity to test myself against the very best players in the Premier League.

“Players have come to West Ham from the Championship and progressed to international honours. That’s something you can’t ignore.”

On the addition of Downes, Moyes said: “We think he’s got good energy. We think he’s got a lot of things which we have about our team, which would want to keep and want to add to,” said Moyes, who is prepared to give the player time to settle in.

“We brought Jarrod Bowen from a similar situation at Hull, so we’re always trying to find boys from the Championship who we think are going to step up to become Premier League players.

“I’m hoping that Flynn does. I think there’s a good chance as he’s got an awful lot of good attributes.”
