STORY: The U.S. government says that if the Ukrainian city falls, that it would not necessarily give Moscow momentum in the war.

Russia's winter offensive has produced no notable gains, failing to seize ground in Luhansk province further north and taking heavy losses in particular around Vuhledar to the south.

The Institute for War Studies think-tank said it was still not clear whether Ukraine would pull out of Bakhmut or stay on to continue wearing down the Russian force. Either way, Moscow's offensive appeared to be reaching its high-water mark.

    STORY: U.S. President Joe Biden signed a bill on Monday requiring the declassification of information related to the origins of the coronavirus.Whether the pandemic was the result of a lab leak from China's Wuhan Institute of Virology,or jumped from animals to humans at a Wuhan market remains a hotly contested debatewith divisions even among U.S. intelligence agencies. China has said there is no credibility behind the lab leak theory.In 2021, Biden directed intelligence agencies to investigate COVID-19's origins.In a statement Monday, Biden said: "In implementing this legislation, my administration will declassify and share as much of that information as possible..."He added that it was essential to find out the origins of the pandemic to prevent another one. The same morning state TV released photos of Kim overseeing the North’s latest missile test with his young daughter. It’s not known when or where the pictures were taken.State broadcaster KRT aired them a day after South Korea and Japan reported the launch of a North Korean short-range ballistic missile off its east coast. It’s the latest in a flurry of weapons tests by Pyongyang in recent weeks as the U.S. and the South continue a month of their annual combined military drills. They include air and sea exercises involving U.S. B-1B strategic bombers. The North has reacted furiously to the drills, calling them a rehearsal for invasion against it. In his comments in state media, he was quoted as saying that “the enemies are getting ever more pronounced in their moves for aggression against the DPRK,” and that it requires the North “to bolster up its nuclear wear deterrence exponentially.”
