Into the 'Well of Hell': cavers reach bottom of mysterious Yemen chasm

Driven by their passion to explore the unknown, a team of Omani cavers are believed to be the first to reach the bottom of Yemen's mysterious Well of Barhout. The little-understood natural wonder, also known as the "Well of Hell", is shrouded in local folklore which says the giant hole in the desert was created as a prison for demons. Situated in the eastern province of Al-Mahra, closer to the border with Oman than to the capital Sanaa 1,300 kilometres (800 miles) away, the well is 30 metres wide and approximately 112 metres deep.
