Waterspout Forms Over Alabama Creek as Dust Devil Meets Water

A waterspout formed on Reed Creek in Shelby, Alabama, when a passing dust devil moved from land to water on April 3.

Lauren Wilson Shelnut said she was relaxing with her husband on their waterfront deck when they spotted the dust devil moving from land onto the creek. A thin veil of vapor had begun swirling across the water by the time Shelnut got her phone ready to record.

“The whispy sounds became louder as the waterspout became larger. We watched it as it moved across the back of the slough and towards our side of the water. Once it hit land again, it disappeared and all was quiet again,” Shelnut told Storyful. Credit: Lauren Wilson Shelnut via Storyful
