Water-Skier Marks 80th Birthday in Style on English Lake

A veteran water-skier celebrated his 80th birthday in style on July 31, zipping along the lake at DAMS Watersports in St Neots, England.

Irving “Irv the Swerve” Stone was at South Lake with his family and friends to slalom ski for the day, British Water Ski and Wakeboard said.

Stone has been water skiing since 1962 and is a former British over-55 slalom record holder. He still skis and 52 kmh, British Water Ski and Wakeboard said.

His feats are all the more impressive given that he’s had macular degeneration since 2002. He was told he should not ski again due to the loss of vision caused by the disease.

Stone was off the water for a few months, but after “nearly going mad” for the lack of it, decided he just had to go back to his favored sport. Credit: British Water Ski and Wakeboard via Storyful
