The zodiac wheel is composed of 12 zodiac signs, each of which is categorized further into one of four elements: Earth, Fire, Water and Air.

“All four elements are interchangeable and correlate to each other because they give each other energy,” astrologer and bestselling author Lisa Stardust tells PEOPLE. “They represent the complexity of matter, the atmosphere, and existence.”

Water, specifically, is made up of the zodiac signs Scorpio, Pisces and Cancer, the latter of which kicked off its season on June 20 due to 2024’s leap year.

“Since the tides of the ocean are controlled by the Moon and we are composed of 60% water, this element has a profound impact on us Earthlings,” Stardust explains.

From their characteristics to their compatibility with other zodiac signs, here’s everything to know about Water signs.

What are Water signs?

Three zodiac signs are categorized as Water signs: Cancer (June 21-July 22), Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) and Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20).

Though they don’t directly sit next to each other on the zodiac wheel, they are all considered passive element signs. (Earth signs are considered passive too, whereas Fire and Air are active signs. According to astrologer Kyle Thomas, active elements "tend to be more extroverted, assertive and spontaneous," while passive elements "tend to be more introverted and self-contained with greater inner resources of power and passion.")

What are the characteristics of Water signs?

According to Stardust, Water signs are known to be “compassionate, empathetic, sensitive, caring, and inventive.” Stardust adds that they have a “sentimental” side and “they keep flowing because water is infinite, meaning that they go from one thing to another quickly because they constantly evolve and grow as a transcend into something more excellent.”

“Think of the ocean; it's infinite and large in mass,” notes Stardust. “The same can be said for our emotions, hearts, and memories.”

Stardust notes that Cancer signs, which are ruled by the moon, are “emotionally mature, artistic, and sensitive,” and adds that “they like to remain in their comforts and nurture others.”

Similarly, Stardust says that “Scorpios are emotionally deep” as they are ruled by Mars and Pluto. “They like to connect with others in a profound way, but will sting others when they are let down,” Stardust says.

Ruled by Jupiter and Neptune, “Pisces are super intuitive and psychic,” according to Stardust. “They can feel the emotions of others. This Water sign is creative and imaginative.”

What signs are Water signs most compatible with?

Stardust notes that Water signs “connect the best with other Water signs and Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) because they help each other grow and spread roots,” and says the “need for security and beauty is what aligns them the most.”

Cancer: According to Stardust, Cancer signs get along best with Taurus and Pisces signs. While a Taurus helps the Cancer sign “grow [without veering] from their comfort zone,” a Pisces is artistic and creative in a similar way, “allowing them to have the same aesthetic.”

Scorpio: Scorpios are most compatible with Pisces and Virgos. While Scorpio and Pisces “always find each other and get along well because they take care and nurture each other," Scorpio and Virgo “offer each other sensual and intellectual pleasure that lasts a lifetime,” Stardust says.

Pisces: Pisces are great matches with Capricorns and fellow Pisces. When it comes to Capricorns, the Water signs share “a camaraderie” with the Earth sign based on” their reflective and nostalgic sentiments.” Meanwhile, two Pisces “share a passion for romanticism and believe in each other’s dreams.”

What signs are Water signs least compatible with?

“As a whole, Water signs get along the least with Fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) because water puts out fire,” Stardust says. Stardust also notes that “Air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) provide logic which can be hard for the emotion-based Water signs.”

Cancer: Stardust notes that “Cancer and Aquarius don't see eye to eye since the water-bearer is distant and aloof, and Cancer is affectionate and sentimental.” Additionally, Cancer-Aries “is a tough alliance because Aries can be argumentative and make Cancer cry when confronting them.”

Scorpio: Scorpios will likely have a “tense time connecting” with a Leo because the sign is “the light and Scorpio the darkness,” Stardust says, adding that “finding a middle ground can be challenging for them.” Similarly, Scorpio and Sagittarius “have a complex relationship,” Stardust says, noting that “the archer’s bow and arrow is aligned with the heart of the Scorpio in the sky.”

Pisces: Despite both being ruled by Jupiter, the Sagitarrius “can be too aggressive and combative for tender Pisces,” Stardust says. Meanwhile, “Pisces and Gemini have a tough time connecting because Gemini communicates with words and Pisces is more intuitive in connecting with others.”
