Water Gushes Through Piazza Amid Deadly Flooding in Sicily

Flash flooding caused by fierce storms left at least two people dead and another missing in the Cantania region of Sicily on Tuesday, October 26, Il Giornale reported.

A 53-year-old man from Catania became the second victim of the floods, after a 67-year-old man was killed on Sunday in the town of Scordia.

Emergency services are still searching for the first victim’s wife, the paper said.

3BMeteo reported that up to 350 mm (13.8 inches) of rain fell in the province in the space of just 72 hours. The area’s typical annual rainfall is approximately 600 mm (23.6 inches), they said.

Italy’s national firefighters said they had carried out over 600 rescue operations due to the flooding.
