The Rental, written and directed by Dave Franco, tells the story of two couples – husband and wife Charlie and Michelle, and boyfriend and girlfriend Josh and Mina (Mina also happens to be Charlie's business partner). They go on an oceanside getaway in a seemingly perfect rental house.
However, they begin to grow suspicious that the host may be spying on them. Before long, what should have been a celebratory weekend trip turns into something far more sinister.
The Rental stars Dan Stevens as Charlie, Alison Brie as Michelle, Sheila Vand as Mina, and Jeremy Allen White as Josh. It has long been available to watch in the USA, having become the second film ever to top VOD charts and the box office in the same weekend.
So what's up with the UK release? Well, the good news is The Rental is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video exclusively from today (January 22).
The Rental's Brie recently spoke with Digital Spy about working on the film with her husband Franco and the themes that truly hit home for her. "The first real horrors that present themselves in the movie just all have to do with the deterioration of these relationships, and the deterioration of trust within these couples," she said.
"But then on this macro level, it's sort of about how divided our country is right now, and how people don't trust one another in a day-to-day space. But somehow when we're home-sharing, we just don't think – it's in the abstract.
"I just kind of love the parallels that are happening over the course of this movie, like these dangers that are happening because of the trust that they put in this home-sharing app that becomes more and more present in their lives as their personal trust is breaking down."
The Rental's positive reviews have also pegged Franco as a director to watch. In fact, he has ideas for a sequel.
Franco told Forbes: "It was the intention from the beginning to leave the ending ambiguous enough that we carry on the story if given a chance... I have a very strong idea for what I would want to do with a sequel."
"It's almost difficult to talk about because I don't want to give away too much from the first film, but I will say the sequel would deal a little bit with the mythology of our villain and potentially be set somewhere outside of the US."
Sounds promising. But given the general state of the world, it seems an apt time to quote the Yiddish adage: "Man makes plans, God laughs." Besides which, Brie also revealed that she and Franco wrote a script during the lockdown in which she will play the female lead – which means that while a sequel for The Rental may be a long way off, there's still more Franco-Brie work to keep an eye out for.
The Rental is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from Friday, January 22
