Washington National Guard Fills Sandbags as Flooding Impacts Lewis County

Heavy rain and melted snow raised river levels and caused major flooding in Lewis County, Washington, on Friday, January 7, prompting highway closures.

Authorities temporarily closed a 20-mile stretch of Interstate 5 though Thurston and Lewis counties as the flooding worsened on Friday, according to reports.

Footage released by the Washington National Guard shows its members filling sandbags in Centralia during flood response operations for Lewis County, they said.

The floods were expected to impact areas along the Skookumchuck River, Chehalis River, and Newaukum River into Saturday evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Landslides remained a threat across the greater Seattle region due to saturated soil, according to the NWS. Credit: Washington National Guard via Storyful
